Giovanni, detto Marco, è figlio di Maria di Gerusalemme, nella cui casa si raduna la comunità cristiana e dove Pietro trova rifugio dopo la liberazione dal carcere (cf. At 12, 12). Cugino di Barnaba, collabora con Paolo nel primo viaggio missionario, fino in Panfilia, dove si separa da lui (cf. At 12, 25; 15, 37-38). Discepolo prediletto di Pietro – che lo chiama «figlio mio» (1 Pt 5, 13) –, compare di nuovo al fianco di Paolo a Roma (cf. Fm 24; Col 4, 10). A Marco la tradizione ha attribuito il Vangelo che porta il suo nome e riecheggia la predicazione dell’apostolo Pietro. In esso, si presenta Gesù come il «Cristo, Figlio di Dio» (Mc 1, 1) e si proclama che il Crocifisso è risorto (cf. Mc 16, 6). La sua festa è celebrata il 25 aprile anche dai Copti e dai Bizantini.

Inizialmente le sue spoglie furono venerate in una chiesa di Alessandria costruita sul luogo del più antico mausoleo di Alessandro Magno. Nel sec. VII i suoi resti furono portati a Venezia. La cattedrale di San Marco al Cairo conserva alcune reliquie trasportate dalla Basilica di San Marco a Venezia.
